1) COURSE INSTRUCTOR INTRODUCTION. Meet Dr. Terry Dwelle, the creator of our Global Health Basic Concepts specialized certificate course.
2) GLOBAL HEALTH INTRODUCTION. Discuss reasons to study global health. Review national immunization days and smallpox eradication as examples of global health best practices. Discuss progress and challenges for global health. Review the importance of addressing disparities. Review the concept of health linked to development. Discuss the importance of global collaboration. Define health, public health and global health.
3) DETERMINANTS OF GLOBAL HEALTH. Discuss the important role of understanding the determinants of global health. Review the five categories of health determinants. Discuss the health risks of indoor air pollution and contaminated water. Review the four categories of genetic diseases. Discuss major gender and age determinants of global health. Discuss the close linkages between social environmental determinants and healthy behaviors. Review the importance of deep beliefs and values informing cultural institutions and behaviors. 11) FOODBORNE TREMATODIASES AND GLOBAL HEALTH. Review the concept of DALYs as it relates to food borne tissue termatodiases. Review the life cycles of key liver, lung and intestinal trematodes. Discuss the clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment of food borne trematodiases. Review community and personal control measures for food borne tissue trematodiases. 12) SCHISTOSOMIASIS AND GLOBAL HEALTH. Review the concept of DALY’s as they relate to global Schistosomiasis. Review the life cycle of Schistosomiasis. Discuss the three determinants of human infection with Schistosomiasis. Review the concept of Selective Public Health and its relationship to Schistosomiasis transmission. Review Schistosomiasis disease syndromes, diagnosis and treatment. Review the 6 major prevention measures to control Schistosomiasis. Emphasize the importance of a comprehensive approach to control Schistosomiasis. 13) MEASLES, RUBELLA AND GLOBAL HEALTH. Review the global impact of measles and rubella. Review the clinical aspects of measles and rubella diseases. Discuss the concepts of the measles herd immunity threshold and vaccine efficacy coefficients. Review the World Health Organizations Global Vaccine Action Plan, strategic goals and objectives. Review major measles vaccine schedules. Review major concepts behind the 2020 Ethiopia mass measles vaccine campaign during the Covid-19 pandemic. Discuss the importance of global rubella vaccination programs to prevent congenital rubella syndrome.14) FINAL PROJECT. Demonstrate your ability to apply the global health concepts covered during this certificate course to public health practice in a written assignment.
